           Episode IV

           A NEW HOPE

It is  a period  of  civil  war.
Rebel    spaceships,    striking
from  a hidden  base,  have  won
their   first  victory   against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During   the    battle,    Rebel
spies  managed  to steal  secret
plans     to     the    Empire's
ultimate   weapon,   the   DEATH
STAR,    an     armored    space
station  with  enough  power  to
destroy an entire planet.

Pursued    by    the    Empire's
sinister    agents,     Princess
Leia  races   home  aboard   her
starship,   custodian   of   the
stolen   plans  that   can  save
her    people    and     restore
freedom to the galaxy....

Blockade Runner -- Main Passageway

3PO:

Did you hear that? They shut down the main reactor. We'll be destroyed for sure. This is madness.

聞こえたかい？メイン・リアクターが破壊された。これで確実に終わりだ。もうダメだ。

3PO:

We're doomed.

絶望的だよ。

3PO:

There'll be no escape for the Princess this time.

今度ばかりは姫も逃げられないだろう。

3PO:

What's that?

何だ？

Blockade Runner -- Sub Hallway

3PO:

R2-D2, where are you?

R2-D2、どこへ行った？

3PO:

At last. Where have you been? They're heading in this direction. What are we going to do? We'll be sent to the Kessel spice mines or smashed into who knows what.

いたか。どこへ行ってたんだ？やつらがこっちへ来るぞ。どうしよう？ケッセルのスパイス鉱山へ送られるか、壊されてガラクタにされてしまうよ。

3PO:

Wait a minute. Where are you going?

ちょっと待て。どこへ行くつもりだ？

Blockade Runner -- Cockpit Corridor

Trooper:

The Death Star plans are not in the main computer.

デス・スターの設計図はメイン・コンピュータにはありません。

Vader:

Where are those transmissions you intercepted? What have you done with those plans?

傍受した通信内容はどこにある？あの設計図はどうしたのだ？

Antilles:

We intercepted no transmissions. This is a consular ship. We're on a diplomatic mission.

通信の傍受などしていない。この船は外交船だ。我々は外交任務中だ。

Vader:

If this is a consular ship, where is the ambassador?

外交船だというのなら特使はどこにいる？

Vader:

Commander, tear this ship apart until you've found those plans! And bring me the passengers! I want them alive!

司令官、設計図が見つかるまでこの船を徹底的に調べ上げろ！そして乗員たちをわしのもとへ連れて来い！生かしたままでだ！

Blockade Runner -- Sub Hallway

Trooper:

There's one. Set for stun.

誰かいるぞ。スタンにセットしろ。

Trooper:

She'll be all right. Inform Lord Vader we have a prisoner.

大丈夫だ。ヴェイダー卿に捕虜を拘束したと伝えろ。

Blockade Runner -- Lifepod Bay

3PO:

Hey. You're not permitted in there. It's restricted. You'll be deactivated for sure.

おい。そこに入る許可は得てないぞ。立ち入り禁止だよ。確実に作動停止にさせられてしまうよ。

3PO:

Don't call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease. Come out, before somebody sees you.

思慮のない哲学者なんて呼ぶな、この太りすぎの潤滑油の塊めが。誰かに見つかる前に出ておいで。

3PO:

Secret mission? What plans? What are you talking about? I'm not getting in there. I'm going to regret this.

極秘任務だって？何の設計図だ？何を言ってるんだ？私はそんなところに入らないよ。困ったことになったなぁ。

Star Destroyer

Officer:

There goes another one.

もう1機発射されました。

Officer:

Hold your fire. There's no life-forms. It must have short-circuited.

撃つな。生命体は乗っていない。ショートでもしたんだろう。

Escape Pod -- Space

3PO:

That's funny. The damage doesn't look as bad from out here.

おかしいな。ここから見る限りそんなにダメージを受けてないぞ。

3PO:

Are you sure this thing is safe?

これは安全なんだろうね？

Blockade Runner -- Space

Leia:

Darth Vader. Only you could be so bold. The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this. You've attacked a diplomatic--

ダース・ヴェイダー。乱暴が過ぎるわね。帝国元老院も今度ばかりは黙っていないでしょう。外交船を攻撃するなんて・・・

Vader:

Don't act so surprised, Your Highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you.

見え透いた芝居はおやめなさい、姫君。今回は慈悲深い任務ではないはずです。反乱軍のスパイがこの船に数度の送信を行いました。彼らの送った設計図がどうなったのかを知りたいのですよ。

Leia:

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan.

何を言っているのかさっぱり分かりません。私は帝国元老院の一員としてオルデランへの外交任務に就いているのです。

Vader:

You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor.

貴様は反乱同盟軍の一員であり反逆者だ。

Vader:

Take her away!

連れて行け！

Daine:

Holding her is dangerous. If word gets out, it could generate sympathy for the Rebellion in the Senate.

彼女を拘束するのは危険です。このことが漏れれば元老院が反乱軍支持に傾きかねません。

Vader:

I have traced the Rebel spies to her. Now she is my only link to finding their secret base.

反乱軍スパイを追跡して彼女にたどりついたのだ。いま彼女はわしにとって秘密基地を見つけるための唯一の手がかりだ。

Daine:

She'll die before she'll tell you anything.

自白する前に死を選ぶでしょう。

Vader:

Leave that to me. Send a distress signal, and then inform the Senate that all aboard were killed.

わしに任せろ。遭難信号を送信し、元老院に搭乗者は全員死亡したと報告するのだ。

Praji:

Lord Vader, the battle station plans are not aboard this ship, and no transmissions were made. An escape pod was jettisoned during the fighting, but no life-forms were aboard.

ヴェイダー卿、バトル・ステーションの設計図はこの船にはありません。送信も一切行われていませんでした。戦闘中に脱出ポッドが射出されましたが、それにも生命体は乗っていませんでした。

Vader:

She must have hidden the plans in the escape pod. Send a detachment down to retrieve them. See to it personally, Commander. There'll be no one to stop us this time.

あの女は脱出ポッドに設計図を隠したのだ。分遣隊を送り込んで回収させろ。何としても見つけ出すのだ、司令官。今度ばかりは誰にも邪魔はさせん。

Praji:

Yes, sir.

はい、閣下。

Tatooine -- Desert

3PO:

How did we get into this mess? I really don't know how. We seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life.

どうしてこんな厄介なことになってしまったんだろう？本当に分からないよ。苦しむために作られたみたいだ。一生このままなんだろうね。

3PO:

I've got to rest before I fall apart. My joints are almost frozen.

バラバラになる前に休まないと。関節が凍りそうだよ。

3PO:

What a desolate place this is.

なんとも荒涼とした場所だなあ。

3PO:

Where do you think you're going? Well, I'm not going that way. It's much too rocky. This way is much easier.

どこへ行こうとしてるんだい？あのね、私はそっちへは行かないよ。岩が多すぎるよ。こっちのほうがずっと楽だよ。

3PO:

What makes you think there are settlements over there?

なんでそっちに街があるなんて分かるんだ？

3PO:

Don't get technical with me.

屁理屈ばかり言うな。

3PO:

What mission? What are you talking about?

何の任務だって？何を言ってるんだ？

3PO:

I've just about had enough of you. Go that way. You'll be malfunctioning within a day, you nearsighted scrap pile. And don't let me catch you following me, begging for help, because you won't get it.

君には本当にうんざりだよ。勝手に行け。どうせ1日で動作不良になってしまうよ、短気なくず鉄の寄せ集めが。助けを求めて追ってきても無駄だからね。

3PO:

No more adventures. I'm not going that way.

もう冒険はたくさんだ。そっちへは行かないよ。

3PO:

That malfunctioning little twerp. This is all his fault. He tricked me into going this way. But he'll do no better.

イカれたチビの間抜けめ。全部あいつのせいだ。私を騙してこっちに行かせたな。まったくろくなことをしないやつだ。

3PO:

Wait. What's that? A transport. I'm saved.

待てよ。なんだあれは？乗り物だ。助かった。

3PO:

3PO:

Someone was in the pod. The tracks go off in this direction.

誰かポッドに乗っていたんだな。足跡がこっち方向へ向かっている。

Felth:

Luke, tell Uncle if he gets a translator, be sure it speaks Bocce.

ルーク、叔父さんに翻訳機を買うならボッチ語を話すのにしてちょうだいって言っておいてね。

Luke:

Doesn't look like we have much choice, but I'll remind him.

他に選択の余地はないと思うけど言っておくよ。

Owen:

Yeah, we'll take that red one. No, not that one.

Owen:

I suppose you're programmed for etiquette and protocol.

3PO:

Protocol? It's my primary function, sir. I am well-versed in all the customs--

Owen:

I have no need for a protocol droid.

Of course you haven't, sir. Not in an environment such as this. That's why I have been programmed--

Owen:

I need a droid who understands the binary language of moisture vaporators.

わしが探しているのは水分凝結機の二進言語を理解できるドロイドだ。

3PO:

Vaporators? Sir, my first job was programming binary load lifters, very similar to your vaporators in most respects.

凝結機？私が最初に行った仕事はバイナリー・ロード・リフターのプログラムでした。おそらく凝結機と非常に似通っているものと思われます。

Owen:

Can you speak Bocce?

ボッチ語は喋れるか？

3PO:

Of course. It's like a second language.

もちろんでございます。第2の言語も同然です。

Owen:

3PO:

Owen:

Luke:

But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters.

でもトシ・ステーションにパワー・コンバータを取りに行くことになってるんだよ。

Owen:

You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done. Now come on. Get to it.

友達と無駄な時間を費やすのは仕事が終わってからだ。ほら、さっさと取り掛かれ。

Luke:

All right. Come on. And the red one. Come on. Come on, red. Let's go.

Luke:

Uncle Owen.

Owen:

This R2 unit has a bad motivator. Look.

Owen:

3PO:

Excuse me, sir, but that R2 unit is in prime condition, a real bargain.

Luke:

Owen:

Owen:

Luke:

3PO:

Don't you forget this. Why I should stick my neck out for you is quite beyond my capacity.

3PO:

Thank the maker. This oil bath is going to feel so good. I've got such a bad case of dust contamination I can barely move.

創造主に感謝。このオイル風呂はまさに最高です。埃汚れがあまりにもひどくてほとんど動けない状態でしたから。

Luke:

It just isn't fair. Biggs is right. I'm never gonna get out of here.

不公平だよ。ビッグズの言うとおりだ。ここから出られやしない。

3PO:

Is there anything I might do to help?

何か私にお役に立てることはございますか？

Luke:

No, not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport me off this rock.

3PO:

I don't think so, sir. I'm only a droid and not very knowledge able about such things. Not on this planet, anyway. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure which planet I'm on.

それは無理です、ご主人様。私はただのドロイドでして、そのような特殊な知識は持ち合わせておりません。この惑星のことも何も知りませんし。こう言っては何ですが、実は自分が何という惑星にいるのかも存じてないのです。

Luke:

Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from.

ああ、もし宇宙に輝ける中心地があるとしたら、この惑星はそこから一番遠くにある星さ。

3PO:

I see, sir.

そうですか、ご主人様。

Luke:

You can call me Luke.

ルークと呼んでくれ。

3PO:

Luke:

3PO:

Oh...And I am C-3PO, human-cyborg relations. This is my counterpart, R2-D2.

あ・・・私はC-3PO、人間機械間通訳ドロイドです。こいつは相棒のR2-D2です。

Luke:

Hello.

やあ。

Luke:

A lot of carbon scoring here. Looks like you've seen a lot of action.

ここがかなり焦げてるな。ずいぶん派手に動き回ったんだな。

3PO:

With all we've been through, sometimes I'm amazed we're in as good condition as we are, what with the Rebellion and all.

さんざんな目にいろいろ遭ってきましたので、ときどき今のような良好な状態でいられることに驚いています。反乱やら何やらあったりしたものでして。

Luke:

You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?

帝国に対する反乱のことを知っているのか？

3PO:

That's how we came to be in your service, if you take my meaning, sir.

あえて言いますと、ここへ来ることになったのもそのためなのです、ご主人様。

Luke:

Have you been in many battles?

戦いもたくさん見てきたのか？

3PO:

Several, I think. There's not much to tell. I'm not much more than an interpreter and not very good at telling stories. Well, not at making them interesting, anyway.

何度かは。お話しすることはそれほどございません。私はただの通訳でして、物語を話すのは得意でないのです。特に面白おかしく話すのは苦手でして。

Luke:

Well, my little friend you got something jammed in here real good. Were you on a Starcruiser or--

Leia:

Luke:

3PO:

"What is what"? He asked you a question. What is that?

「何だろう」だって？ご主人様がお尋ねだ。何なんだこれは？

Leia:

Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.

3PO:

Oh...He says it's nothing, sir, merely a malfunction. Old data. Pay it no mind.

Luke:

Who is she? She's beautiful.

この女性は誰だ？きれいな人だ。

3PO:

I'm afraid I'm not quite sure, sir. I think she was a passenger on our last voyage. A person of some importance, I believe. Our captain was--

Luke:

Is there any more to this recording?

3PO:

Behave yourself, R2. You're going to get us into trouble. It's all right. You can trust him. He's our new master.

態度に気をつけろ、R2。面倒な事になるぞ。大丈夫だって。この方は信頼してもいいと思うよ。私たちの新しいご主人様だぞ。

Leia:

You're my only hope.

あなただけが頼りです。

3PO:

He says he's the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a resident of these parts, and it's a private message for him. Frankly, I don't know what he's talking about. Our last master was Captain Antilles. But with all we've been through, this R2 unit has become a bit eccentric.

彼が言うには、自分はこのあたりに住むオビ＝ワン・ケノービの所有物でして、これは彼宛のプライベート・メッセージだそうです。おかしな話です。何を言っているのかさっぱり分かりません。我々の前の主人はアンティリーズ船長でした。いろいろなことがあったせいでこのR2ユニットは少々おかしくなっているようです。

Luke:

Obi-Wan Kenobi. I wonder if he means old Ben Kenobi.

3PO:

I beg your pardon, sir, but do you know what he's talking about?

失礼ですが、ご主人様、彼の言っていることにお心当たりがございますか？

Luke:

Well, I don't know anyone named Obi-Wan...but old Ben lives out beyond the Dune Sea. He's kind of a strange old hermit. I wonder who she is. Sounds like she's in trouble. I better play back the whole thing.

ああ、オビ＝ワンという名前は知らないけど・・・ベン老人なら大砂丘海のはずれに住んでいる。風変わりで年老いた隠者だ。彼女が誰なのか気になるな。何か困りごとのようだし。全体を通してみて見たいな。

3PO:

He says the restraining bolt has short-circuited his recording system. He suggests that if you remove the bolt, he might be able to play back the entire recording.

彼曰く、行動規制ボルトが記録システムをショートさせているそうです。ボルトを外していただければ記録をすべて再生しなおせると申しております。

Luke:

Oh, yeah. Well... I guess you're too small to run away on me if I take this off. Okay.

ああ、そうか。いいだろう・・・外してもこんなチビじゃ逃げられないだろう。いいよ。

Luke:

再生しろよ。

Luke:

Where'd she go? Bring her back. Play back the entire message.

彼女はどうした？再生してくれ。メッセージを全部見せるんだ。

3PO:

"What message"? The one you've just been playing. The one you're carrying inside your rusty innards.

「何のメッセージだ」だって？今さっき再生していたやつだよ。その錆付いた内臓にしまっているやつのことだ。

Beru:

Luke! Luke!

ルーク！ルーク！

Luke:

I'll be right there, Aunt Beru.

すぐ行くよ、ベルー叔母さん。

3PO:

I'm sorry, sir, but he appears to have picked up a slight flutter.

申し訳ありません、ご主人様。少々動揺しているようでして。

Luke:

Here. See what you can do with him. I'll be right back.

しょうがないな。何とかしておいてくれ。すぐに戻るから。

3PO:

Just you reconsider playing that message for him.

なぜあの方にメッセージをお見せしないんだ。

3PO:

No, I don't think he likes you at all.

Luke:

That R2 unit might have been stolen.

あのR2ドロイドは盗品みたいだよ。

Owen:

What makes you think that?

なぜそう思うんだ？

Luke:

I stumbled across a recording while I was cleaning him. He says he belongs to someone called Obi-Wan Kenobi. I thought he might have meant old Ben. Do you know what he's talking about?

掃除していたら偶然記録が出てきたんだ。オビ＝ワン・ケノービという人の持ち物なんだって。ベン老人のことじゃないかと思うんだけど。彼から何か聞いたことはない？

Owen:

Umm.

いや。

Luke:

I wonder if he's related to Ben.

ベンと何か関係のある人かもしれないよ。

Owen:

That wizard's just a crazy old man. Tomorrow, take that R2 unit to Anchorhead and have its memory erased. That'll be the end of it. It belongs to us now.

あの魔術師はただのイカれた老人だ。明日、あのR2ユニットをアンカーヘッドへ持って行って記憶を消してしまえ。もう終わったことだ。いまはわしらのものだ。

Luke:

But what if this Obi-Wan comes looking for him?

でもそのオビ＝ワンが探しに来たらどうするの？

Owen:

He won't. I don't think he exists anymore. He died about the same time as your father.

来ないよ。もう生きてはいない。お前の父さんと同じころに死んだんだ。

Luke:

He knew my father?

父さんの知り合いなの？

Owen:

I told you to forget it. Your only concern is to prepare those new droids for tomorrow. In the morning, I want them on the south ridge working on those condensers.

その話は忘れろ。明日までに新しいドロイドを使えるようにすることだけを考えていればいいんだ。朝になったら南の山でコンデンサーを見させるつもりだ。

Luke:

Yes, sir.

わかったよ。

Luke:

I think those new droids are gonna work out fine. In fact, I was also thinking about our agreement--about me staying on another season. If these new droids work out, I want to apply to the academy this year.

あの新しいドロイドたちはよく働いてくれると思うよ。だから、約束したことについて考えてたんだ・・・もう1シーズンここにいたらって話のことなんだけど。あの新しいドロイドたちが働くようになったら、今年からアカデミーに通いたいんだ。

Owen:

You mean the next semester before the harvest?

収穫前の来学期にということか？

Luke:

Sure. There's more than enough droids.

うん。ドロイドが十分補ってくれるよ。

Owen:

Harvest is when I need you the most. It's only one season more. This year we'll make enough on the harvest to hire more hands, and then you can go to the academy next year. You must understand I need you here, Luke.

収穫はおまえの力が一番必要になる時期だ。もう1シーズンだけだ。今年は人手を雇って十分な収穫ができる。そうなれば来年にはアカデミーに行かせてやる。今はまだ必要なんだ。分かってくれ、ルーク。

Luke:

But it's a whole 'nother year.

でもさらに丸1年あるよ。

Owen:

It's only one more season.

たったのもう1シーズンじゃないか。

Luke:

That's what you said when Biggs and Tank left.

ビッグズとタンクが出て行ったときも同じことを言ったよ。

Beru:

Where are you going?

どこへ行くの？

Luke:

Looks like I'm going nowhere. I have to go finish cleaning those droids.

どこにも行くところなんてないじゃないか。ドロイドたちの掃除を仕上げてくるんだよ。

Beru:

Owen, he can't stay here forever. Most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him.

オーウェン、いつまでもここに引き止めておくことはできないわ。友達もほとんど出て行ってしまったし。あの子にはそれが大きいのよ。

Owen:

I'll make it up to him next year. I promise.

来年には行かせてやる。約束するよ。

Beru:

Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him.

ルークは農民じゃないのよ、オーウェン。父親の血が多く流れているんだわ。

Owen:

That's what I'm afraid of.

それが心配の種なんだ。

3PO:

Ouch!

Luke:

What are you doing hiding back there?

そんなところに隠れて何をしてるんだ？

3PO:

It wasn't my fault, sir. Please don't deactivate me. I told him not to go, but he's faulty, malfunctioning. Kept babbling on about his mission.

The Empire doesn't consider a small, one-man fighter to be any threat...or they'd have a tighter defense. An analysis of the plans provided by Princess Leia has demonstrated a weakness in the battle station. The approach will not be easy. You're required to maneuver straight down this trench, and skim the surface to this point. The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. A precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the station. Only a precise hit will set up a chain reaction. The shaft is ray-shielded, so you'll have to use proton torpedoes.
